Do you know that it is illegal to be renting a vehicle that is registered under an individual’s name or company’s name?

All rental vehicles must be registered with the Land Transport Authority of Singapore under “Hire Usage” and must be properly insured with insurance coverage that caters strictly to a rental vehicle. If a rental vehicle is not properly insured under a “rental insurance policy”, all claims be it Own Damage, Third Party Property Damage and Bodily Injury claims will be repudiated under law. Hence, hirer who are caught unaware by this very important requirement, will have to bear the costs of all legal reimbursements as well as recovery costs to Third Party claims out of their own pockets.

According to Straits Times and AsiaOne Motoring articles:

'Private car owners are not allowed to rent out their cars through rental companies,' LTA's spokesman said.

"The LTA cracked down on six cases each in 2005 and 2006 and on 11 last year. There have already been six cases in the first four months of this year. Both car owners and rental firms face fines of up to $1,000, jail terms of up to three months or both. Car owners also risk a driving ban of up to 12 months."

The LTA said it takes a serious view of illegal rentals, and is consistently taking action against those who fail to comply with the law.

Do take note that driving without a proper insurance is an offence and if caught, driver could face both fine and jail.
